Chinatown’s Tiengarden Celebrates World Vegetarian Awareness Month
IDA’s Valerie Sicignano to Speak on the Benefits of Vegan Diet on World Vegetarian Day

New York, NY—In celebration of World Vegetarian Awareness Month, Chinatown’s Tiengarden will host a vegan food tasting and day of vegetarian festivities. Valerie Sicignano of In Defense of Animals (IDA) will give a talk about the benefits of a vegan diet for human health, the environment, and animals and screen a video featuring vegan bodybuilder, Kenneth Williams:

When: Saturday, October 1, 12:00 noon
Where: Tiengarden’s new location inside Silk Road Mocha Café, 30 Mott St.

The billions of animals killed for food in the U.S. each year aren’t the only ones who suffer because of meat consumption. Consumers who overindulge in meat and dairy foods also pay a high price, as consumption of animal products has been linked to a host of health ailments.

Because the diets of rural China are mostly plant based, they are much lower in fat and animal protein and much higher in fiber than American diets. As Chinese shift toward a typical Western diet containing larger amounts of animal fats, they are also increasing their risk of heart disease and cancer. During his “China Study,” Cornell nutritional biochemist T. Colin Campbell found that even eating small amounts of animal-based foods is linked to significantly higher rates of cancers and cardiovascular diseases typically found in the U.S. Ninety percent of Asians are lactose-intolerant.

“We are delighted that Tiengarden is introducing customers to a vegan diet that is good for you, good for animals, good for the Earth and good for your taste buds too!” says IDA spokesperson Valerie Sicignano.
