Animal Advocates Challenge AKC Stance on Cosmetic Surgery

Advocates Claim Ear Cropping, Tail Docking Should Be Penalized—Not Rewarded

MILL VALLEY, Calif. In a blistering critique of current American Kennel Club (AKC) policy, In Defense of Animals (IDA) has challenged the AKC to end its promotion and support of ear cropping and tail docking when conducted for cosmetic purposes only. For certain breeds, the AKC actually penalizes dogs who have not had their tails docked or ears cropped.

IDA sent a letter to AKC Chairman Ronald H. Menaker citing the findings of The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) that “Ear cropping and tail docking in dogs for cosmetic reasons are not medically indicated nor of benefit to the patient. These procedures cause pain and distress, and, as with all surgical procedures, are accompanied by inherent risks of anesthesia, blood loss, and infection.”

In a letter dated July 2, IDA asked the AKC to take a proactive stand against the ear cropping and tail docking of dogs for cosmetic purposes.

Dr. Elliot Katz, IDA president and a veterinarian, wrote, “In this day and age, no dog should be subjected to painful surgical procedures that are accompanied by inherent risks of anesthesia, blood loss and infection for cosmetic purposes. [The AKC is] involved in setting the standard for the appearance and show quality of dogs….If the AKC reversed its stance by actually penalizing those animals who have had surgery, it would send an important message to handlers and breeders everywhere to discourage procedures that could cause animals needless distress.”

Citing the AKC’s practice of penalizing breeds such as the Weimeraner for not having their tails docked, or stating that Boxer puppies should have their ears cropped, Dr. Katz asserted that current AKC policy “flies in the face of the humane and medical recommendations of the AVMA and results in untold numbers of dogs, both show and non-show, being subject to these unnecessary, painful and oftentimes dangerous cosmetic procedures.”

IDA urged AKC Chairman Menaker to notify its members of its condemnation of surgical procedures solely for cosmetic purposes.

The Mill Valley, California-based advocacy organization also called for a deadline of January 1, 2004, after which show dogs will be penalized if they have had their ears cropped or tails docked solely for cosmetic purposes.

Says IDA’s Katz, “Taking such a stand will show the animal welfare community that the AKC is taking a humane approach to the showing and breeding of animals and will provide a powerful example for others to follow.”
