One Lucky Animal in a Sea of Slaughter

Cows are intelligent and gentle mammals, and there is no doubt that they are aware of their impending doom while they are transported in and then unloaded from trucks and are made to approach the kill floor of a slaughterhouse. Animals are helpless as they witness the pain and terror endured by their friends and they know that the same experience is awaiting them, and that there is nothing stopping it.

Recently in Queens, New York, one individual cow fled for his freedom as he was being placed in a kill holding pen in the Jamaica Archer Live Poultry & Meat Market. After two hours of desperately running through the streets (much to the puzzlement of onlookers), the New York Police Department emergency service captured Freddie and returned him to the slaughterhouse. Several animal activists and members of the general public pleaded for his freedom. Animal activist, Mike Stura,, even camped out of the slaughterhouse all night and talked the slaughterhouse owner into allowing the cow to live. Mike named the cow Freddie, and transported him to safety at The Skylands Animal Sanctuary in New Jersey.

What has started as an isolated incident involving one individual cow, Freddie, at one slaughterhouse in New York, will hopefully gain momentum in recognizing the terror all animals face as a consequence of our dietary choices which each of us have the power to change.

The foods we eat and the groceries we buy have a big impact on our comfort and convenience, but even more so on intelligent and gentle mammals like Freddie. By adopting a vegan lifestyle you can save roughly 200 animals per year from unimaginable suffering and death!
