Oppose Urban Deer Killing in Michigan

The city of Farmington Hills is considering killing urban deer within city limits. The University of Michigan in Dearborn has already killed dozens of deer this past February, and the city of Ann Arbor along with the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor campus) has also proposed and is planning to slaughter deer beginning this fall.

Not only is killing deer ineffective due to the compensation factor, where surviving deer have more offspring due to the increased abundance of nutritious food, but killing urban deer is senseless and inhumane.

Killing deer increases reproduction while wildlife fertility control decreases reproduction.

Wildlife fertility control (administered via dart), including GonaConand PZP (porcine zona pellucida), or even permanent sterilization address the core problem—reproduction—and provide a non-lethal and long-term solution. Other humane methods include deterrents which protect property, warning signs for motorists and scientifically-designed Strieter-Lite reflectors, which have been effective in drastically reducing deer-vehicle collisions, and overall education.
