“Outside the Box” Proposal to Remove Cats and Dogs from China’s Markets

“Outside the Box” Proposal to Remove Cats and Dogs from China’s Markets

During China’s recent legislative meetings in Beijing, delegates from across the country came together to discuss ideas, concerns and make proposals. While the top leaders maintain control and make most decisions “behind closed doors,” many delegates took full advantage of the meetings.

One such delegate, Zheng Xiaohe, proposed removing cats, dogs, cat meat and dog meat from China’s food markets. While we applaud Xiaohe, the proposal is unlikely to gain much traction this time around, particularly when the Yulin Dog Meat “Festival” is still allowed to continue. In fact, Xiaohe’s proposal was featured by Wall Street Journal’s China Real Time as one of five “outside the box” proposals. Others included a smog tax and the removal of billboards.

While the proposal may still be considered “outside the box” today, it is undeniable that the cat and dog meat trade is not only concerning to those outside the country, but within China’s borders as well.
