Penang Kills More Than 3,000 Dogs

Rabies Blamed by Malaysian Authorities

After two rabies cases were reported on September 17, the Malaysian state of Penang declared a public health crisis. While the “Rabies Vaccination Order 2015″ addressed pet dogs by requiring all to be vaccinated, the stray and homeless dogs of Penang were dealt a much more severe order. They were to be rounded up and killed instead.

Rightfully so, this caused a massive outcry from Penang’s animal welfare groups, Penang citizens, and animal lovers throughout the world. Many protested and took aim directly at Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, who made the official order.

Unfortunately, it appears that the rabies scare was elevated due to a lack of available vaccines. http://www.themalaysianinsider.com/malaysia/article/shortage-of-rabies-vaccine-as-no-outbreak-since-1999 Because Malaysia was declared a rabies-free country in 2012 by the World Organization for Animal Health, sufficient vaccines were not stocked.
