Plan to Kill 3,200 More Cormorants in Oregon

We recently posted about “hazing” that was happening to cormorants in Oregon, but a permit issued by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on March 18, proves that there is an even greater threat to the birds.

The issued permit says it “can kill up to 3,114 double-crested cormorants, 93 Brandt’s cormorants and 9 Pelagic cormorants this year.”
Frighteningly enough, “workers also can destroy 5,247 double-crested cormorant nests by applying corn oil to eggs that stops embryos from maturing.” This has gone far beyond hazing or harassing cormorants.

But wait. So how many lives are really at risk here if they can destroy 5,247 nests?

Considering female cormorants canlay between 3-5 eggs, if we take the average amount of 4, that’s a total of 20,988 potential lives lost!

We’ve seen actions such as this happen in Oregon before. When will it stop? When there are no more cormorants left?

Let the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers know by commenting on its Facebook page, that killing cormorants cannot and must not continue!
