Killing geese is never the answer. When Canada geese are killed, new geese repopulate the areas because habitat and food sources become available. This locks communities into an endless ineffective, brutal and costly killing cycle.
The town of North Hempstead needs an integrated non-lethal management plan for resident Canada geese that includes:
1. Habitat modification: Geese are attracted to low and open grassy areas surrounding ponds and other water and park areas. Planting shrubs and other vegetation to block their line of sight, and other simple changes in the park landscapes can deter geese from nesting and gathering in high-use areas.
2. Enforcing no-feeding and no-littering rules
3. A budget that includes use of equipment to clean up waste
4. A contraception program that utilizes Ovo-Control which has proven successful wherever used as directed.
For many residents of North Hempstead, watching Canada geese, who are monogamous and highly intelligent birds, presents a wonderful connection to nature in the midst of busy city life. Citizens have spoken out against the cruel and ineffective plan to kill geese and demand non-lethal strategies be implemented instead. Two towns in Westchester, NY—Scarsdale and Mamaroneck recently cancelled plans to kill Canada geese after residents and other activists expressed outrage.
If you cannot attend this meeting on Tuesday, please write to these officials and tell them that you will not tolerate the brutal killing of Canada geese and demand non-lethal strategies be implanted instead.
