Been blasted by past NIH Directors, thousands of NIH-funded researchers and eminent scientists as preventing innovative, risk-taking research

Wasted Opportunity

A former NIH Director and the editor of the prestigious journal Science have blasted the peer review funding system as an "obstacle" to "transformative research," a "wasted opportunity" that forces researchers who want to get funding to "avoid risk-taking and innovation" because of the conservatism of the peer-review process, resulting in research that "has little chance of producing the breakthroughs needed to improve human health." Researchers' criticisms of this system which uses some very questionable types of grants have also included scientific misconduct and misbehaviors engendered because a glut of researchers resulting from the doubling of the NIH's budget ten years ago are fiercely competing for NIH funds.

It is the policy of In Defense of Animals to no longer use language that accepts the current concept of animals as property, commodities and/or things. Rather than refer to ourselves or others as "owners" of animals we share our lives with, we now refer to ourselves and others as "guardians" of our animal friends and to animals as "he" or "she" rather than "it."

"Animals have been regarded as property for way too long. It's high time we took on a more loving and responsible relationship with our kindred beings in the web of life on this beautiful planet. I always think and act as a guardian towards my kindred beings, never as their owner."
