Compelled IDA to request that Congress re-open and expand its investigation of the NIH's management and oversight of billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded grants

Congressional Investigation

Indeed, questions regarding NIH's management and oversight of billions of dollars in taxpayer-funded grants prompted a Congressional investigation in 2003, which In Defense of Animals is urging Congress to re-launch in light of systemic problems with the agency's funding process and unreproducible results of highly-cited, highly-prestigious experiments that have been identified by these thousands of NIH-funded researchers, past NIH Directors and other scientists.

Please help reform the broken NIH funding system and end decades of repetitive animal research by asking the Chair of the House Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, Rep. Cliff Stearns (FL), to re-open the subcommittee's investigation of the NIH.

It is the policy of In Defense of Animals to no longer use language that accepts the current concept of animals as property, commodities and/or things. Rather than refer to ourselves or others as "owners" of animals we share our lives with, we now refer to ourselves and others as "guardians" of our animal friends and to animals as "he" or "she" rather than "it."

"Animals have been regarded as property for way too long. It's high time we took on a more loving and responsible relationship with our kindred beings in the web of life on this beautiful planet. I always think and act as a guardian towards my kindred beings, never as their owner."
