Her name was Petra. She was a female macaque monkey, one of many used in experiments at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Petra was used in a Parkinson’s study and was subjected to multiple invasive brain research. As if that weren’t bad enough, Petra suffered for two years from a painful head wound that wouldn’t heal. Finally it was discovered that a piece of acrylic had been left in her head from an earlier procedure. She couldn’t survive the chronic infection and had to be “euthanized.”

Then there was Peanut, a male rhesus monkey who was also subjected to multiple invasive brain surgeries. Peanut was deliberately deprived of food by experimenters so that he would perform tasks while locked in a restraint chair. He lost 25 percent of his body weight.

Another monkey named Squinty suffered from chronic rashes and lesions all over his body for more than a year.

Petra, Peanut and Squinty are just three of the animal victims at the laboratories of UCSF. There are untold numbers more who have suffered due to the inadequate care and neglect that has been documented by government inspection reports.

Among the hundreds of violations revealed at UCSF: failures to maintain clean enclosures, failure to provide adequate pain relief to animals after invasive surgeries, and failure to provide sufficient food and water to animals, including an incident where mice died of dehydration because staff failed to notice that they didn’t have any water.

Despite all these incidents, and that fact that UCSF has a prior record of poor animal care, UCSF remains accredited by the main accrediting organization in the U.S. – the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC).

If you’re as outraged as we are about this, please take a moment to send a letter to AAALAC, and let them know that UCSF must be held accountable and they are undeserving of AAALAC’s accreditation.
