Running for their Lives

Running for their Lives

End Greyhound Races at Macau’s Canidrome.

Today, hundreds of greyhounds are enslaved at the Macau Canidrome, which is Asia’s only greyhound racetrack. These dogs endure lives of abuse and neglect in between racing, and suffer constant injury during the races. Worst of all, any dog that does not perform well enough in the races is deemed “unprofitable” and is killed. They are not adopted or rehomed, they are simply discarded and destroyed, all in the name of “entertainment” and to make profits. This tragic and meaningless end awaits nearly 400 dogs from the Canidrome every year. Many of the dogs killed are young; often they are less than 3 years old. These dogs are literally running for their lives.

Since 2003, animal rights groups have been advocating for the racetrack’s closure and have successfully persuaded one of the track’s main dog providers, Greyhounds Australaisa, to stop issuing “greyhound passports” allowing the export of dogs to Macau.

Now we’re on the edge of another possible victory. Public pressure is mounting to close the track permanently, just as the track’s concession of land given by the government is set expire later this year at the end of October. This makes for a perfect opportunity to persuade the government not to renew the concession and to force the closure of the Canidrome permanently. Hundreds of dogs’ lives would be saved every year.
