SeaWorld is Trying to Build a Giant Fish Farm

Don’t Let It Happen!

Considering the public’s recent and growing abhorrence to SeaWorld, you would think it would avoid additional endeavors that irresponsibly and inhumanely exploit sea animals and that are notorious for being ecologically hazardous. But, think again… SeaWorld apparently wants to jump from the fire into the frying pan, literally, by getting into the notorious “fish farming” aka aquaculture business.

NPR and other news sources are reporting that Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, the nonprofit research arm of SeaWorld, is partnering with a private investment firm to create a 1.3 square mile aquaculture “farm” just off the coast of San Diego. “The goal,” NPR reports, “is to ‘produce’ 11 million pounds of yellowtail and sea bass each year.”

Take a moment to dwell on just how ill-advised, inhumane and reckless this move is on SeaWorld’s behalf. “SeaWorld tanks as revenue, profit and attendance decline,” according to the New York Post. Thus, SeaWorld proposes capitalizing on the industrialized captivity and cruel slaughter of millions of sentient and pain-feeling fish a year. In case you somehow thought SeaWorld “cares” about animals, now your illusions have truly been laid to rest. Entering the intentional “killing to make a buck” business shows SeaWorld’s true colors and its ongoing willingness to be a relentless force behind any exploitation of anyone who lives in the sea for any reason if a profit can be made.
