The Shocking Secrets of Food Marketing

It’s a food marketer’s job to make you believe that you are getting exactly what you want. A food label can make something sound good or appealing, however in many cases, these claims and labels are deceptive. This is why it’s so important to research and question a marketer’s sales pitch. You might be surprised (and probably even appalled) at what you find out…

Label Deception

We’ve all seen labels like “farm fresh,” “100% natural,” “grass-fed,” or “humanely raised.” But, what many people don’t realize is, that these labels aren’t as meaningful as they sound. The term “humanely raised,” for example, has no standard definition, and the United States Department of Agriculture does not conduct site visits to confirm enforcement for those approved to use the label.

Marketing Language

To create this label deception, food marketers use language that focuses on progress, rather than on the negative aspects. For instance, if a farmed animal is not caged, they may use language such as “cage free” to make it sound positive. But in actuality, cage free can still mean that hens are confined to steel sheds with no natural sunlight, packed so tightly they can barely move or spread their wings among thousands of other hens.
