The Decline of Birdsong and Nature’s Other Voices

It is no secret that there are many visuals which show us that nature’s decline is happening around us; dwindling numbers of birds, to diminishing views of natural waterways. But how often do we notice nature’s sounds?

It has been discovered that between 2004 and 2015, the total sounds produced by living organisms has dropped by a factor of five. This staggering number shows that even though we may not be able to hear the differences of sound in nature on a daily basis, the decline of nature’s voices is real.

Bernie Kraus, a soundscape artist and bioacoustician comments on the decline of nature’s voices by saying, “It’s a true narrative, a story telling us that something is desperately wrong.”

With the world’s human population amounting to over 7.3 billion, this brings exponentially more destruction to the natural world, through such acts as mining and deforestation which are fueled by our appetite for animal based diets, and cheap energy. Our destructive acts are silencing the symphony of sound.

So the next time you’re outside, stop and take time to listen to nature’s voices. If you can still hear them, that is.
