Stop Endangered Bear Sacrifice at Ecuador Festival

Last year, authorities vowed to find the perpetrators of the horrifying torture and crucification of a threatened spectacled bear in Ecuador after a sickening video of the event went viral. One year on, two top governors and the community that took part in the vile bear torturing festival are yet to be dealt justice, and bears are still at risk – we need your help to ensure that another cruel bear sacrifice does not happen ever again.

The chilling video shows two men holding the dead body of a bear with a severely wounded face, covered in cuts and scrapes, and bound with rope. Children and adults can be seen singing, dancing, taking pictures of the scene and themselves with the body of the tortured animal. Shockingly, participants are repeating the names of two top governors of the area: Manuel Vargas and Jose Quizhpi, who are seen climbing off of horses to take part in the cruel festivities. A voice identifies the location as Huangras in Ecuador.

Harming any animal is unacceptable, but the prolonged torture of this particular bear is made all the worse since spectacled bears, “Oso con Anteojos,” are a threatened species in danger of extinction.
