Stop Hawaii Dolphin Harassment

Along Hawaii’s beautiful coastline, trouble is brewing for dolphins. Ann Garrett of the National Marine Fisheries Service recently appeared on NPR’s Morning Edition show to raise the flag on harm being done to dolphins by Hawaiian tour operators. Relentless intrusions of fleets of sightseeing boats and swim-with-the-dolphins tours have been significantly impacting the dolphins’ ability to rest. This is terrible news for the dolphins, whose way of life is being put in danger to make a few bucks. Speak up for the dolphins now, before they are pushed over the edge.

Hawaiian spinner dolphins are known for their energetic jumps and spins, and are mainly active at night. They naturally sleep in the shallow waters close to shore, often in the daytime, during peak beach hours. Garrett recounts that in their attempts to avoid human disturbance, the dolphins are being forced to avoid their preferred resting spots and are getting less rest as a consequence. Think about how you would feel after weeks, months, even years of not getting enough sleep. Just as you would, the dolphins are now suffering from chronic stress.
