Stop Wild Bird "Hazing" Plans in Oregon

Over the last number of years, we have written alerts and posts about the cruel and deadly actions which have been happening in Oregon towards cormorants. Unfortunately the state is planning yet another callous and heartless action against these fascinating aquatic birds, and we need your help once again.

Last week, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife published a news release titled “Cormorant harassment aims to protect young fish.” The Department announced its vile plans to “haze” cormorants from April 1 to May 31 on various river estuaries and bays, and up until at least July 31 on the lower Columbia River. So what does “hazing” actually mean and what can this mean for bird populations?

“Hazing” is usually defined as humiliation, harassment or abuse that is targeted into initiating someone into a group. This form of hazing has nothing to do with inclusion. It’s just a veiled word so that the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife doesn’t outright say that what they’re doing is just plain abuse.

Worryingly, cormorants return to their breeding grounds in late March and early April in the US, meaning that Oregon plans to disturb birds during this very important time for reproduction, which is critical to the local population.

This harsh action seems to have less to do with protecting young fish and more to do with ensuring that cormorant numbers decline.
