Why Should We Subsidize Foods That Make Us Sick?

Why Should We Subsidize Foods That Make Us Sick?

Researchers from Jama Internal Medicine have followed the diets of 10,308 Americans and measured the health effects of eating high-fat meat and dairy products which are heavily subsidized with our taxes.

What the study found, was that those who consumed the highest amount of subsidized foods were 41 percent more likely to be overweight, saw an increase in their cholesterol levels, and were 21 percent more likely to have elevated blood sugars, in comparison with those who consumed the least amount of subsidized foods.

The authors of this study are calling for better aligned policies between agriculture subsidies and the nutritional goals of our society in an effort to combat rising obesity rates and heart disease, the leading cause of death in America.

Right now, legislators are pressuring the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture, Tom Vilsack to bail out the dairy industry with emergency financial assistance after seeing a 40% decrease in profits from 2014. It’s reasonable to suggest that this decrease in profits represents a shift towards more ethical, healthier, more environmentally friendly diets for Americans and we urge you to support this shift by eating less or no animal flesh or dairy products.

A planned action to combat this proposed dairy industry bailout is coming soon. Get involved by staying up to date with our latest campaigns and signing up for our weekly action alerts.
