Let Your Federal Legislators Know That This is the Time to Act!

Every day in America, birds are tricked by glass windows on buildings leading to severe injuries, but more often that not, to their deaths. As glass can reflect a mirror image of wide and open spaces for birds, it’s entirely unavoidable for these beautiful animals to know whether they are actually flying into the leafy tree that they see, or face first into a pane of glass. However, there now finally has been a bill introduced that will hopefully see the end to much of this with new public buildings.

In May of this year, Representatives Morgan Griffith and Mike Quigley introduced the Federal Bird-Safe Buildings Act (HR2280). Of the many standards that this Act proposes, perhaps the most impressive standard is for all public buildings to have at least 90% material other than glass to compose the building up to a height of 40 feet. This would significantly help decrease the number of bird casualties.
