Why Should I Make a Will: Frequently Asked Questions

I don't own much and my savings do not add up to a great deal - is it worth making a will?
Yes, if you don't have much to give, it is all the more important to make sure it doesn't get split up. To make sure your money goes to the people and charities you choose, you must make a will.
Besides, if you own your home, you are wealthier than you think. You need to consider carefully what should happen to it after you die.
Making a will costs you little. And it gives you the satisfaction of knowing you have taken care of the people you love and the charities you support.

I am single, and I haven't many relatives - so why should I make a will?
If you don't, all of your money and everything you have worked for is likely to go to the State. Only by making a will can you choose how your money will be used - to help your friends and charities you support, rather than to fund the State's spending plans.

I am married - my spouse will inherit everything anyway, so surely I don't need to make a will?
This is the mistake many people make. Your husband or wife may not automatically inherit everything unless you have no family or only very distant relations. If you die without leaving a will, the law may decide how your possessions are divided up. Your wife or husband could end up having to sell your home because others are entitled to a share in its value.

So what happens if I don't make a will?
You may leave your family with a complicated, expensive and upsetting problem at a bad time. Or if you have no family or relatives, everything you've worked for all your life may go straight to the State. Either way it's not what you'd want. Making a will is quite easy, and you should do it as soon as possible.
