Turtles Need More Protection, Not Less

Turtles Need More Protection, Not Less

Victory – Thank you New York!

A2490a, a bill which would have allowed the lethal trapping of snapping turtles, was not sent to the Assembly Codes Committee for a vote due to the tremendous public outcry from New York state animal advocates. The Governor, the Assembly Speaker, the sponsor of the bill, and state level Assembly members received hundreds of messages opposing the trapping of snapping turtles.

Snapping turtles can live up to 60 years. Females have been found to travel 10 miles to get to their traditional nesting area. As a result of a vote by New York school children, the common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) was adopted as the State Reptile of New York in 2006.

Trapping of any animal is brutal, inhumane, and unnecessary. Thank you New York residents for taking action on behalf of snapping turtles!
