PAST VICTORIES AND HIGHLIGHTS

Closing down New York University's hideous crack cocaine experiments on monkeys.

The liberation of 40 dolphins by IDA investigator Ben White who flew to Japan to swim underwater in the dead of night to cut the giant nets that held the animals captive.

Testifying before Congress about the horrendous waste and cruelty perpetrated on animals by the military. Our testimony resulted in unprecedented federal investigations into the military's use of animals, along with the inclusion of language in the 1993 Defense Bill that urged the military to decrease its use of animals in invasive and cruel research.

The freeing of 180 "research" beagles after an employee of the University of California notified us of plans to kill the dogs. After gaining entrance to the kennels and secretly obtaining photos of the dogs, we combined behind the scenes negotiations with threats of non-violent civil disobedience to ultimately secure the release of these gentle animals. All have been placed in loving homes.

Saving hundreds of dogs and cats after a devastating "firestorm" swept through the Oakland/Berkeley hills, destroying more than 3500 homes. As the flames died down, IDA staff brought food, water and medical care for the hundreds of stunned, frightened and injured animals hiding in culverts and burned-out foundations. More than 400 dogs and cats were rescued and reunited with tearful families; hundreds more were placed in loving new homes.

Canceling a proposed slaughter of thousands of baby seals off the coast of South Africa.

Co-sponsoring the Primate Freedom Tour, a historic three-month, cross-country tour that stopped at 24 primate facilities, and culminated at the National Institutes of Health in Washington, DC.

Closing down two Mississippi animal dealers suspected of selling stolen family pets to research laboratories.

Filing five lawsuits resulting in the freeing of 42 racing greyhounds from Army and University of California research laboratories after our investigations revealed that they had been fraudulently obtained. Many were already in the midst of painful research. The lawsuits successfully prevented horrific bone breaking experiments on 120 retired racing greyhounds.

Shaking up the Coulston Foundation. As a result of IDA’s investigations, the US Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) has brought three separate sets of federal charges against The Coulston Foundation for multiple violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act, which resulted in an unprecedented settlement with the USDA that orders the lab to divest itself of 300 chimpanzees and to halt its breeding and acquisition programs.

Rescued over 100 goats who were scheduled to be killed on Santa Catalina Island.

Exposing the horrors of puppy mills through undercover investigations, TV exposes including a recent Dateline expose, and the filing of complaints with federal and local authorities.

Joining forces with the Korean Animal Protection Society and Asians for Humans, Animals and Nature, IDA helped kickoff an international effort to stop the legalization of dog eating in Korea by organizing demonstrations jointly at the Korean Consulates in New York and San Francisco. Our efforts were ultimately successful when the Korean government pulled a legislative proposal that would have legalized the bludgeoning, slaughter and eating of dogs in their country.

Thanks to the work of IDA and 11 other Los Angeles-area animal organizations, on March 22, 2000, the Los Angeles City Council passed this nation's strongest spay/neuter ordinance, a brave move that IDA hopes will inspire the enaction of similar legislation throughout the United States. The legislation's components should reduce the number of animals killed by Los Angeles' six city-run shelters. Currently, a grotesque 60,000 animals die annually in these shelters.

Thanks to IDA's campaign, the Big Apple Circus in New York City will no longer be using elephants in its performances.
