PAST VICTORIES AND HIGHLIGHTS |
Closing down New York University's hideous crack cocaine experiments on monkeys. The liberation of 40 dolphins by IDA investigator Ben White who flew to Japan to swim underwater in the dead of night to cut the giant nets that held the animals captive. Testifying before Congress about the horrendous waste and cruelty perpetrated on animals by the military. Our testimony resulted in unprecedented federal investigations into the military's use of animals, along with the inclusion of language in the 1993 Defense Bill that urged the military to decrease its use of animals in invasive and cruel research.
Saving hundreds of dogs and cats after a devastating "firestorm" swept through the Oakland/Berkeley hills, destroying more than 3500 homes. As the flames died down, IDA staff brought food, water and medical care for the hundreds of stunned, frightened and injured animals hiding in culverts and burned-out foundations. More than 400 dogs and cats were rescued and reunited with tearful families; hundreds more were placed in loving new homes. Canceling a proposed slaughter of thousands of baby seals off the coast of South Africa.
Closing down two Mississippi animal dealers suspected of selling stolen family pets to research laboratories.
Shaking up the Coulston Foundation. As a result of IDAs investigations, the US Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) has brought three separate sets of federal charges against The Coulston Foundation for multiple violations of the federal Animal Welfare Act, which resulted in an unprecedented settlement with the USDA that orders the lab to divest itself of 300 chimpanzees and to halt its breeding and acquisition programs.
Thanks to the work of IDA and 11 other Los Angeles-area animal organizations, on March 22, 2000, the Los Angeles City Council passed this nation's strongest spay/neuter ordinance, a brave move that IDA hopes will inspire the enaction of similar legislation throughout the United States. The legislation's components should reduce the number of animals killed by Los Angeles' six city-run shelters. Currently, a grotesque 60,000 animals die annually in these shelters. Thanks to IDA's campaign, the Big Apple Circus in New York City will no longer be using elephants in its performances.
