Are You Wearing Dog Skin?

As the dog meat trade persists throughout Asia, the horror stretches far beyond those borders. While the flesh of dogs is consumed in places such as China, South Korea and Vietnam, the skin of these dogs is sent all over the world. That’s right. If you wear leather, you could be wearing the skin of a dog right now.

A recent story out of China shone the light on this serious, but little known issue as passersby stumbled upon hundreds of dog skins set out to dry under a bridge in Hefei, Anhui province. The scene is beyond horrific, as it is the aftermath of the torture and slaughter each dog endured before having his or her flesh sold to restaurants for humans to consume. This is also only one of thousands of similar scenes throughout Asia.

This horror knows no bounds as such dog skins are then turned into various leather items, such as gloves, belts and bags, and exported throughout the world. Such products are often mislabeled or not labeled, leading consumers to unknowingly purchase products they would otherwise adamantly avoid. Since the United States imports many leather goods, such products have undoubtedly made their way into our stores and, if you purchase leather, your home.
