Disturbed by reports of unchecked abuse in animal labs at UC Berkeley in the summer of 1983, Dr. Elliot Katz, DVM, decided that it was time to fight for what he knew was right and founded Californians for Responsible Research to stop animal abuse once and for all. Under the tenacious leadership of Dr. Katz, vicious animal experiments were halted, UC Berkeley was fined $12,000, CFR became In Defense of Animals and an entire movement was born! Nearly 37 years later, and with your help, In Defense of Animals has won victory after victory for animals all over the world. We are 250,000 supporters strong and run an international network of sanctuaries and animal rescue and advocacy efforts.
