September 6, 2022, was a horrifying day for George, a dog who couldn't have known that a neighbor would bind his neck and drag him to death with his truck in Mississippi. Fortunately, his abuser was caught. Please urge the prosecutor in this case to seek maximum penalties.
A witness reported seeing a man stop his truck to get out and check if the dog he was dragging was still there, or dead yet. The witness tried unsuccessfully to intervene, and reported the truck's license plate and the man's appearance to the Crystal Springs Police Department.
Shortly after this sighting, a man fitting the same description was reported to the Public Works Director Russell Brewer after having tried to dispose of a dog in a city dumpster.
Mayor Sally Garland personally launched an investigation with Brewer to successfully identify the perpetrator, telling us, “We are mortified and our hearts are broken over the very idea that someone could tie a wire around a dog's neck and drag him. No one should think that they can ever drag a dog and get away with it.”
On September 14, Daniel Berthelette was arrested for this ruthless crime.
Our Hope Animal Sanctuary and Justice for Animals Senior Campaigner Doll Stanley learned of this crime, gathered the details, and got involved. Stanley communicated with Mayor Garland and Prosecuting Attorney Brock Campbell to let them know that Berthelette was mistakenly charged with a misdemeanor. The charge was later rightfully amended to a felony.
Berthelette will have a preliminary hearing shortly, the case will be bound over to the grand jury. Berthelette will be indicted and on his way to a circuit court conviction.
