Stop Bison Bloodbath in Grand Canyon National Park Led by Volunteers

Grand Canyon National Park is home to breathtaking views, picturesque naturescapes, and unique wildlife. Every year, 5.5 million visitors flock to the park for a one-of-a-kind experience. Now, however, unnamed volunteers will gun down the park's iconic bison who have resided in the region for centuries. Urge Secretary Deb Haaland to stop this ridiculous plan and pledge not to visit the park until all plans to massacre bison have been withdrawn!

Up to 500 bison reside in the northern region of Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. The National Park Service (NPS) is summoning 12 volunteers to kill one bison each at the federal park's North Rim. Nearly 45,000 people from around the country applied to participate in the bloodbath, which is expected to take place this fall. NPS states that the volunteers must be “willing to haul bison carcasses out of wilderness on foot without motorized assistance.” The carcasses will be given to the volunteers.

Sounds too ridiculous to be true? Tragically, it is not and the rationale behind the hunt is no better:

“You'll see them wading in the pools, munching grass next to the pool, just having a great time,” said Kaitlyn Thomas, a spokeswoman for NPS. “They don't generally go somewhere else to go to the bathroom, so they'll just go right there.” Hunting is prohibited within national parks, but the Service has the authority to kill animals who harm resources, using park staff or volunteers. Only 15% of applicants to kill the bison were actually from Arizona, so the vast majority of potential participants do not feel a direct, imminent threat from bison who “go to the bathroom” in the state.

In no uncertain terms, we believe animals have the right to “have a great time” and “go to the bathroom” in their natural habitats without being slaughtered for it.

In the 1500s, there were an estimated 30-60 million bison in North America according to the NPS. By the 1800s, the number had dropped dramatically to approximately 400 individuals. Efforts to restore bison populations were successful with an estimated 500,000 bison throughout the continent.

Now, the NPS once again wants to massacre bison populations through this disastrous volunteer program and continued efforts to “thin the herd.” Perhaps it is time we learn from past mistakes?
