Devoted Guardians

People all over the world are devoted to their animal companions and spare no expense when it comes to their care. As such, people of all economic backgrounds make wonderful caregivers for adoptable animals every day. Pictured here is Prince, aptly named by his adopted family. Prince’s guardians do not have much money themselves, but provide the love and affection and veterinary care Prince sorely lacked when he was a pup.

Prince began his life by narrowly escaping a cruel death in the busy streets of Mumbai, India, where dogs are often struck and killed by speeding cars and trucks and then forgotten about, and left to suffer and die. Prince’s mother and siblings were not so lucky, but Prince managed to survive the road hazards long enough to be found by rescuers at IDA India. He was then adopted last year.

Although Prince’s new guardians are not at all wealthy, they spoil him with affection. It turns out that Prince’s favorite treat is sharing in his new family’s vegetable garden, and his number one choice for a special snack is eggplant (which is safe for dogs). Guardianship also means providing the responsible care all animals deserve.

In this picture Prince is seen waiting patiently with his new family at an IDA-India immunization clinic where he will receive his regular check-up as well as scheduled vaccinations. If you look closely you can see that Prince has been marked by a concerned family member with a ‘tilak’ on his forehead (that’s the black ash mark on his head meant to ward away evil spirits). True guardianship is measured not by the amount money in one’s pocket but by the love and compassion in their hearts.
