Soft Sentencing is a Mockery of Justice

On May 16, 2016, In Defense of Animals’ Mississippi based Justice for Animals Campaign learned of the sick and brutal attack on a cat with a plastic pipe. Tilly was sheltered at the Brookhaven Animal Rescue League in Mississippi after her guardian passed away, which is where the horror happened. Moments after the unprovoked beating Tilly was rushed for veterinary emergency care, but she died of her extensive injuries.

This was a premeditated attack. Jody Cothron entered the Brookhaven shelter on May 13, and asked to see kittens. The attendant told him there were no kittens, but there were cats.  He asked to see them. Pulled away to assist with a loose dog, the shelter attendant left the cat room with no hint that the man looking at the cats would act so ferociously, with bloodlust and psychotic gratification for other’s suffering.  When the attendant returned she saw Cothron exiting the building. What she found would haunt her forever. She found Tilly lying lifelessly on the floor, blood around her, with a broken plastic stick nearby.
