California shelters are overwhelmed, and too many dogs, cats, and other animals are waiting for help because spay and neuter services are out of reach for far too many communities. Now, a commonsense bill would help encourage more veterinary professionals to volunteer their skills where they are urgently needed.

AB 1733, authored by Assemblymember Alex Lee, would modernize California's veterinary continuing education requirements by creating a dedicated pathway for no-fee spay and neuter work performed for shelters and rescue organizations. Please urge your California Assemblymember to support AB 1733!

With the passage of AB 1733, veterinarians could receive credit for up to four hours of no-fee spay and neuter services, and registered veterinary technicians could receive credit for up to two hours of qualifying spay and neuter support under supervision. This bill recognizes the real value of hands-on service for animals and encourages more veterinary professionals to help shelters and rescue groups.

California shelters are facing severe overcrowding, longer stays, increased euthanasia risk, and a shortage of veterinary support. Spay and neuter access is one of the most effective ways to reduce suffering before animals are born into homelessness, abandonment, or shelter systems that are already stretched too thin.

Subject: Please Support AB 1733 to Help Expand Spay/Neuter Access

As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to support AB 1733.

California shelters and rescue organizations are facing overwhelming pressure, and access to affordable spay and neuter services remains a critical need across the state. When access to these services is limited, more dogs and cats are born into homelessness, shelter overcrowding worsens, and more animals suffer.

AB 1733 would help by modernizing continuing education requirements for veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians. The bill would create a dedicated continuing education pathway for no-fee spay and neuter services provided to public shelters, humane societies, SPCAs, and rescue groups. This would better recognize the value of volunteer veterinary service and encourage more professionals to lend their skills where they are urgently needed.

This is a practical, compassionate measure that supports animal welfare, shelter capacity, veterinary professionals, and communities struggling with access to care.

Please vote yes on AB 1733.

Sincerely,

Signed
