Los Angeles, California: Protest the Reptile Super Show in Pomona on Saturday
The Reptile Super Show in Pomona, California is an annual event that exploits reptiles and amphibians for display and sale to the public, disregarding animal cruelty, public health and safety, and conservation concerns. These expos are held at packed convention centers with sellers who cram snakes, lizards, tortoises, frogs and other species into tiny plastic containers, bins, and cages.
The Reptile Super Show not only causes animal suffering during the exposition itself, but it fuels the harmful captive reptile trade, causing immense suffering to animals and threatening biodiversity. Reptiles displayed and sold at expos endure unnatural and stressful conditions, leading to malnutrition, debilitating health issues, and premature death. These events prioritize profits over animal welfare, hyping attendees into purchasing exotic species they are often ill-equipped to care for properly.
Even under the best circumstances, no vivarium can replicate the complex ecosystems that reptiles call home in the wild. Breeders at these shows profit from capturing vulnerable wild populations, perpetuating the exploitation of critically endangered species and undermining conservation efforts. The captive reptile industry is also closely tied to illegal wildlife trafficking, which poses significant risks to human health, ecosystems, and the survival of native species.
At expos like the Reptile Super Show, reptiles and amphibians are confined in cramped plastic containers and sold to the general public as commodities. While customers see only the most sellable animals, many others suffer behind the scenes. The result is a tragic cycle of neglect, with animals often developing health issues and deteriorating rapidly after purchase.
Animals are not products to be sold—they are living beings who deserve respect and care. For those considering a reptile companion, adoption through reputable shelters and rescue organizations is the compassionate choice. Let’s work together to protect reptiles from exploitation and take a stand against the cruelty of the captive reptile trade.
We are demanding an end to the sale of reptiles and other animals at expos, citing the harms of captivity, the destruction of wild animal populations, and the risk of disease transmission to humans and other animals.
We are being joined by PETA, L.A. Animal Save, Animal Alliance Network, L.A. Animal Defense League, and a Los Angeles grassroots organizer as we come together to host a protest against the Reptile Super Show at the Fairplex in Pomona, California. We hope that you can join us.
