Carnivores Anonymous Meeting Attendees Learn Vegan Ethical Obligation

In Defense of Animals held our third Carnivores Anonymous meeting on Monday, September 25 in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California. Carnivores Anonymous is a 12 step program that empowers residents of the local community to save animals, maintain optimum health, lose weight, reverse chronic illness and tackle food addictions through plant-based eating.

Our guest speaker this month was Amy Jean Davis. Davis has been vegan for 15 years and originally came to Los Angeles in 2008 as a Top 24 Finalist on American Idol. She owns a home in LA with a micro-sanctuary for animals called Love Always Sanctuary. In 2016, Amy began organizing LA Animal Save, the Los Angeles chapter of The Save Movement, founded by Anita Krajnc. She also works for Nation Earth, the production company behind the EARTHLINGS and UNITY documentaries. She loves spending time with her vegan boyfriend, Shaun Monson, and their pack of vegan rescue dogs! She also loves busting the myth that vegans are frail by exercising regularly and running an Instagram account called @halfnakedvegan

Amy shared her amazing story with us from being a child who was fascinated with nutrition to becoming a vegetarian at 20 years old after finally learning the truth about dairy cows, to attending her first Animal Save event in Toronto. We invite you to listen to her story here.

After listening to Amy’s journey, everyone was invited to discuss their current challenges in adopting a plant-based lifestyle. The two most common responses we heard were difficult family members and food cravings. We developed Carnivores Anonymous specifically to help our members deal with these challenges. Every member is encouraged to find a sponsor in the newly developed sponsor database. Sponsors are there for their fellow members, from helping them choose a delicious plant-based alternative when they’re having cravings for animal products to learning strategies to navigate family events, to taking part in activism.

Whether you are an omnivore, vegetarian, vegan, or somewhere in-between, we invite you to join us as we move through our plant-based eating journeys together. If you’re in Los Angeles, we invite you to join our next meeting on October 30. You can view the event page here. If not, please sign up at www.carnivoresanonymous.org to join or start a Carnivores Anonymous group near you. We hope to see you soon!
