Just ahead of Boknal days in South Korea, when most dogs are slaughtered for consumption, a member of the National Assembly has introduced a bill that would end the country's dog meat trade for good. Please urge lawmakers to pass this bill!
The Special Act, which was introduced by Democratic Party Assembly Member Han Jeoung-ae with 11 co-sponsors, would ultimately ban the breeding, slaughter, and consumption of dogs for their meat in the country and provide opportunities for farmers to transition into other livelihoods.
It's estimated that around 1 million dogs are bred and slaughtered each year for consumption, with the highest numbers killed during Boknal days in July and August. They languish in barren cages without proper food, water, or veterinary care before being brutally slaughtered, often in front of each other.
Even though the majority of South Koreans don't eat dog meat and increasingly oppose this insidious trade, it's been allowed to continue. However, more and more, attitudes are changing and there have been some promising developments in recent years that point to an end in sight, including the creation of a task force to examine this issue, and current First Lady Kim Keon-he speaking out in favor of a ban.
The introduction of the Special Act in the South Korean National Assembly is the latest development in the movement to ban the torture and killing of dogs.
In Defense of Animals has been working for 20 years to end the dog meat trade in South Korea — longer than any other U.S. organization. We collaborate with South Korean activists and support them on the ground to save dogs from the dog meat trade. Since 2017, our partnership with Jindo Love Rescue has saved more than 700 dogs and flown them to loving forever homes in North America.
This Special Act is an exciting sign the momentum to ban this horrifying trade in South Korea is growing and the end is potentially in sight. Please act now to stand with citizens and politicians to encourage the National Assembly to push this long-overdue bill through and protect dogs from a heartbreaking fate.
