South Korea's New President Must Ban the Dog Meat Trade

While there have been some promising signals out of South Korea that the dog meat trade's days are numbered, there is still no official action plan to end it. Urge newly elected president Yoon Suk Yeol to act to bring this cruel industry to an end.

Over the past two years, there have been a number of signs that the dog meat trade may soon come to an end, from former president Moon Jae-In suggesting it's time to consider a ban to recently-elected president Yoon Suk Yeol pledging support while campaigning if there was social consensus. In 2021, a task force was also created to address this issue, and more recently a ban was proposed in Seoul, while politicians lament that existing laws to protect dogs are not being enforced — yet no concrete steps have been taken to end it.

In Defense of Animals

While the number of Koreans who won't eat dog meat continues to grow, and surveys show there is widespread support for a ban, thousands upon thousands of dogs continue to suffer on meat farms and are slaughtered in horrifying ways.

It's long past time for South Korea, which is the only country in the world that still allows intensive farming of dogs for human consumption, to take steps to ban the slaughter and consumption of dog meat — not only to improve animal welfare, but to protect public health.
