WATCH: Hope & Healing: Cats You Saved from Yulin Meat Markets

These courageous cats survived the harrowing Yulin meat trade thanks to your support! Through our lifesaving partnership with Paws of China, these felines are transforming from despair and have even brighter days ahead. It’s a testament to the power of compassion and what your donation can do. Take a moment to learn about these kitties’ incredible journey and how you could be part of their next chapter.

Cat meat is offered for sale during the Yulin Dog Meat Festival and year-round in the meat markets of Jilin where the festival is held. Few cats are still alive when sold, but in June, our brave partners at Paws of China found some live cats in cages, just moments from death. The actions of our partners aided by your gifts made it possible to rescue these cats from a harrowing fate. Thanks to a lot of love and care from their Chinese rescuers, and your unwavering support, they are making incredible progress.

Meet the Rescued Cats

Ash, DaoDao, Mars, Phoenix, Venus, Long, Rhu, and Zhi Zhi are eight courageous cats whose lives have been forever changed. Each has a unique story, but they all share a common thread of survival and resilience.

Ash & DaoDao

Found severely malnourished and covered in parasites, these brave cats have made incredible progress. Ash now dominates the cat house, while DaoDao is partial to scratching posts and continues to thrive.

Zhi Zhi - available to adopt!

Rescued from a cage outside a restaurant, Zhi Zhi suffered trauma and respiratory illness. He's on the path to recovery, gaining confidence day by day.

Phoenix - available to adopt!

Phoenix, rescued from a Yulin market, has made a full recovery after treatment for parasites and a respiratory infection.

Venus - available to adopt!

Venus, spotted being stuffed into a sack at the market, is incredibly affectionate and available for adoption in the U.K. or U.S.

Long & Rhu - available to adopt together!

These two feline friends were seen in a rusty cage on a market street, destined for unimaginable horrors. They've been treated for parasites and are now looking for their forever homes.

Mars - available to adopt!

Rescued from a crowded market street, Mars carries the scars of past traumas. With the support of fellow felines, she has been learning to love and is now available for adoption.

These are just a few of the countless stories we're working to rewrite through our partnership with Paws of China.

The Heartbreaking Reality of China’s Cat Meat Trade

Some of these innocent animals are stolen from their homes before being sold to meat traders. Even more heartbreakingly, some are sold by their own guardians. Piled into cages or stuffed into bags like potatoes, they endure unimaginable suffering.

Paws of China checks every animal they save for identification. However, microchipping is rare, and few of the collars have ID tags. Almost all animals who can recover from their physical or mental trauma need to find an adopter.

Adoptions Available

As part of our commitment to giving animals from the meat trade a second chance at life, we're pleased to announce that these cats are looking for loving homes!

You can learn more about Paws of China’s adoption process here

We also offer adoptions of dog meat survivors through our partners in South Korea, Jindo Love Rescue

Good, loving homes are always needed. If you're considering expanding your family, please consider adopting one of these deserving animals.

Raising Awareness

With over 1.4 billion people in China, representing diverse cultures, many are unaware of the cat and dog meat trade. Just like in the U.S., the vast majority of the public isn’t aware of the short, brutal lives of animals used for meat. Our partnership aims to shed light on this issue, ignite conversations, and drive change.

Paws of China is a rare and remarkable organization that values every life, regardless of species. They share our vegan mission to rescue not just cats and dogs, but many other animals from becoming meat, including horses, camels, and sheep.

If you already choose animal-free food and drink, thank you! If you want to make a difference for animals every time you eat, take this chance to get your free Vegan Starter Guide today.
