In Defense of Animals Signs on to Asia for Animals Appeal for Elephants in Circuses in India

Working to Help India’s Circus Elephants!

We have signed on with 195 other organizations to Asia for Animals (AfA) Coalition in support of its End Circus Suffering campaign, orchestrated by AfA member organization, the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO), whose aim is to end animals from being abused in circuses across India.

AfA’s appeal letter is respectfully urging the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, “to prohibit the use of animals in circuses and uphold the high standards of compassion and equality that are prescribed in the Indian constitution.”

Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO)'s End Circus Suffering campaign has led the Central Zoo Authority of India to pass orders in December of last year, cancelling its “recognition” of 21 circuses for keeping wild animals, after official inspections along with photo and video footage exposed terrible abuse and suffering. Circuses across the country will now be prohibited from housing elephants and other wild animals. FIAPO’s campaign has helped to rehabilitate more than 160 injured animals from 15 circuses.

We will keep you posted on further encouraging developments for India’s elephants who are used and abused in circuses.
