Los Angeles: Rally to Free Billy & Tina From the #1 Worst Zoo for Elephants!

Los Angeles: Rally to Free Billy & Tina From the #1 Worst Zoo for Elephants!

We recently released our 2024 list of 10 Worst Zoos for Elephants. Once again, the Los Angeles Zoo made the top spot as the number one worst zoo, due to the decades of suffering of its lonely, aging elephants, Billy and Tina. Join us on Saturday, March 22, 2025, along with co-hosts Elephant Guardians of Los Angeles, Los Angeles for Animals, and Nonhuman Rights Project to send the message that it is time to #FreeBilly and #FreeTina from their lonely life of incarceration at the LA Zoo.

How many years does Billy have to bang his head on the barn door from the utter frustration of living in an impoverished and tiny enclosure, not even 1% of his home range in Asia? How much longer does Tina have to bob and sway, a sign of her stress and dismay at losing her mates, Jewel and Shaunzi? Billy and Tina both have zoo-related diseases and conditions, including pronounced zoochotic behavior, the product of long life in a zoo. Every day, year after year,  they walk on hard ground that damages their feet and joints, with no ability to forage in their barren 1-acre yard, choose their mates, or experience any semblance of life as a real elephant.

Billy and Tina, 40 and 58 are considered very old because in zoos, elephants age faster than in the wild. It is imperative to release them from the Los Angeles Zoo as soon as possible, so they don’t die as so many other elephants have at the zoo. Please help us give Billy and Tina the chance while there is still time, to live like the wild, free elephants they were meant to be.

We urge you to provide massive support to end Billy and Tina’s decades of pain and suffering at the Los Angeles Zoo. We encourage the zoo to send them both to freedom at a true elephant sanctuary.
