Send Grieving Zoo Elephant to Sanctuary Before it’s Too Late!

This alert is no longer active, but here for reference. Animals still need your help.

We are deeply saddened by the death of Sujatha, an Asian elephant at the Santa Barbara Zoo who was euthanized in October. Sujatha is survived by Little Mac, her constant companion of 46 years, who is now the sole remaining elephant at the zoo. With just days until another zoo makes an assessment of Little Mac, we need to speak out immediately to get her to sanctuary instead of another zoo!

Santa Barbara Zoo’s CEO, Rich Block, has publicly stated that Little Mac will be the Zoo’s last elephant. This is great that the Zoo is keeping to its commitment to close its elephant exhibit! But rather than have Little Mac go to another zoo, or remain alone in Santa Barbara, we are urging Mr. Block to send Little Mac to an accredited sanctuary. There she can get the specialized care she needs, the chance to spend her years in a place where she is no longer on display to the public, and enjoy room to roam with the vital companionship of other elephants.

The Santa Barbara Zoo has a Memorandum of Understanding with the San Diego Zoo that when an elephant dies, San Diego would receive the surviving elephant. An elephant “expert” from the San Diego Zoo will be assessing Little Mac at the beginning of November to seal her fate.

When questioned about sending Little Mac to sanctuary, Block has responded that The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee “would be an option but we're not kind of thinking in that area yet."

Little Mac’s fate could be decided in just days! Urge Mr. Block to make the best decision possible for Little Mac - sanctuary, not another zoo!
