Our Second Annual Respect for Fish Day was a Huge Success!

Our Second Annual Respect for Fish Day was a Huge Success!

Our second annual Respect for Fish Day made quite a splash! Over 250 organizations, alongside many dedicated individuals, joined together to raise awareness for the plight of fish, who are one of the world’s most abused animals.

For this year’s Respect for Fish Day, we teamed up with the creators of The Dark Hobby to present two live panel discussions highlighting documentaries focused on saving marine animals and the deadly impact of the aquarium trade on fish and marine ecosystems.

Panelists included Lisa Levinson, Campaign Director for In Defense of Animals; Paula Fouce, The Dark Hobby Director; Leilani Munter, featured in Racing Extinction, Oceanic Preservation Society documentary filmmaker, and former professional racecar driver; David McGuire, National Geographic Explorer, International Ocean Film Festival (San Francisco), and Shark Stewards Director; Swati Thiyagarajan, environmental journalist at Sea Change Project, which produced My Octopus Teacher; Mary Finelli, Founder and President of Fish Feel; and Ashley Byrne, Associate Communications Director for PETA.

Check out the recorded live streams below:

We also hosted a protest with Stop SeaQuest Woodbridge to denounce the ongoing animal welfare violations occurring at SeaQuest locations nationwide. Please sign our alert urging the U.S. Department of Agriculture to inspect and shut down these cruel and problematic facilities!

Nearly 7,000 people have also signed our Petco alert to urge the retailer to stop the online sale and shipment of fish. Fish sent through the mail suffer from the effects of suffocation, toxic water, starvation, temperature extremes, and rough handling, with significant numbers of these fish arriving dead or dying shortly thereafter. Please sign if you haven’t already!

Huge thanks to The Dark Hobby and all of the panelists who created a fantastic, educational livestreams, the dedicated Stop SeaQuest Woodbridge team and protest attendees, the hundreds of organizations, groups, and individuals who signed on as allies, and of course, you, for supporting our Respect for Fish Day campaign to create a more compassionate world for fish! Thank you!
