WATCH: “It” Works! Over 10,000 Guardian Signatures Delivered, Now Join the Fireside Chat
To celebrate Guardian Month this May, we delivered thousands of your signatures to major media organizations urging them to update their language for non-human animals to reflect the fact they are sentient beings — not inanimate objects. Learn more about what we’re doing and how to get involved by joining our next Fireside Chat!
In Defense of Animals’ founder Dr. Elliot Katz spent his later years dedicated to convincing people of the enormous transformative power of language through our Guardian campaign, which encourages people to never think or refer to other animals as being the owned property of humans, and to consider ourselves their guardians, not their owners. Sadly, Dr. Katz passed away several years ago, but we continue to honor his legacy through Guardian Month and are proud to continue his work on the Guardian campaign.
The Guardian campaign is dedicated to changing the way we think and speak about animals. For example, instead of referring to animals as "it" we should refer to them as "he," "she," or "they." Changing the way we speak about animals shifts the view of them as commodities and objects to sentient beings who deserve rights. By shifting the way we talk and think about animals we have the power to shift the entire framework around how we treat them.
This year, we delivered a letter signed by over 12,000 In Defense of Animals supporters to The Guardian, Associated Press, Netflix, and National Geographic asking these large organizations to update their language to refer to animals as beings, not objects.
