The deaths of multiple cats in Oklahoma highlight serious problems with the justice system and what happens when those suffering from mental health issues abuse animals. Urge the district attorney to seek sentencing that addresses these problems.

On March 8, 2023, Tiffany Goodrich called the Ardmore Police Department to report finding two of her kittens dead on her porch with injuries the police captain called “pretty disturbing.”

Suspect Jaquez Law was interviewed and denied committing the heinous crimes, but after Goodrich filed a protective order against him, he admitted to killing them.

Law, who has been diagnosed with schizophrenia, also has many other previous charges and was convicted last summer for wounding and killing kittens in a separate incident. In that case, police found two kittens in his backpack, one was injured and taken to a vet, but sadly the other was dead. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail and five years of probation.

Law has also been charged with domestic abuse, and court documents for that case state he told the victim he had committed sexual acts on cats.

There's no excuse for failing to provide appropriate sentences that attempt to address the root cause of these incidents and provide treatment that would reduce recidivism and protect future victims.

Law is now facing up to five years in jail and a $5,000 fine. He is due in court on April 13 for a preliminary and motion hearing.
