China's Cruel Canidrome Greyhound Race Track To Close Its Doors!

China's Cruel Canidrome Greyhound Race Track To Close Its Doors!

As 2017 winds down to a close, we are thrilled to share with you another groundbreaking win for animals! Thanks in part to your support, and with the dedication and action of thousands of dedicated activists, the Canidrome is officially closing down, and the last race will be July 21, 2018.

The Canidrome, Asia's only greyhound racing track, opened in 1931 in Macau, China. This infamously cruel racetrack was home to hundreds of neglected and abused greyhounds who were forced to race until they were no longer considered to be profitable. Most greyhounds suffered horrendous injuries including broken limbs, and were killed at a very young age, often before they were 3 years old.

It is estimated that approximately 30 dogs were sentenced to death every month, making the total number of dogs that were destroyed during the racetrack's nine decades of operation a truly staggering and heartbreaking number.

The Canidrome has been a target for many animal protection groups for decades. ANIMA Macau and GREY2K USA Worldwide have played an integral role in this monumental victory. We can (and should) celebrate the Canidrome's closing, but the challenges are not over for the approximately 650 dogs that called this brutal racetrack "home."

Now, we need two things to happen:

1) We need the government of Macau to hand over the 650 greyhounds at the Canidrome into the care of ANIMA Macau.

2) We need to help ANIMA Macau find suitable homes for each of the 650 greyhounds.
