Force Surrender of Gravely Ill Dog from Backyard Breeder

This alert is no longer active, but here for reference. Animals still need your help.

An extremely neglected dog in urgent need of medical attention is suffering at the hands of a Mississippi “entrepreneur.” Please join us in urging the Union County Sheriff to take action against this heartless woman so the dog can receive the care she desperately needs due to years of mistreatment.

Kathy Cleveland of Myrtle, Mississippi has exposed her entire sorry backyard breeding operation through a series of social media posts. In 2011, Kathy posted she would care for her ill and injured dog at home because a veterinarian would cost too much. In 2013, Cleveland posted puppies she was selling and giving away on the Union County Buy, Sell and Trade Facebook page.

This culminated in a horrific post on October 2, 2018, when Cleveland posted a picture of her dog who is clearly in distress. Hope Animal Sanctuary Operations Manager Sharon Stone spotted the picture of the neglected dog, MeMe, who had a large mass hanging beneath her, presumably a mammary tumor caused by repeated breeding.

The same month,  Cleveland posted her plans in Mississippi Pet Connection’s public Facebook group to start a “Go Fund Me” page to raise money for MeMe’s medical treatment. On November 7th, she posted the same photo and asked if anyone knew how to remove the large mass.

Sharon Stone took immediate action to prevent exploited and suffering MeMe from further harm.

Deputies for the Union County Sheriff’s Department deployed to Cleveland’s home. She duped them into believing she consulted a veterinarian who told her removing the growth would cause it to return somewhere on the dog’s body. In Defense of Animals’ Justice for Animals Campaign is preparing letters from veterinarians stating the mass should be surgically removed, barring any conflicting health concerns.

Please join us in moving Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards to order Kathy Cleveland to provide the surgery for MeMe or to surrender her to an animal sanctuary where she will receive the love and care she deserves.
