Pet stores continue to prop up commercial breeders who continue to churn out animals with little care about their well-being, which has devastating outcomes for animals themselves and for people who want to welcome a new family member.

Lawmakers in Minnesota are working to address this issue with legislation (HF 2627/SF 1943) that would stop new pet stores in the state from selling dogs and cats and add transparency requirements for current stores. Urge representatives to pass this legislation!

It's understandably hard to resist adorable puppies and kittens in pet stores, but continued sales of these animals are supporting large-scale breeders, many of which have been exposed for keeping animals in horrifying conditions.

The proposed legislation in Minnesota would stop any new pet stores in the state from selling dogs and cats, while allowing them to work with rescues. It will also require existing stores to source animals from licensed breeders and disclose the breeder's information. Dealers will also have to disclose information about animals, including health history and breeder inspection reports, while cities, towns, and counties would also be able to enact stricter legislation.

SF 1943 has passed the Senate and is now in the House for consideration.

As someone concerned with animal welfare and the overwhelming number of animal companions in need of homes, I’m writing to urge you to pass SF 1943, which would ban new pet stores in the state from selling dogs and cats and improve transparency at existing stores.

Inspections of these facilities have found animals in horrifying conditions, treated as nothing more than commodities sold for profit. This has serious consequences for their welfare and heartbreaking outcomes for people who buy dogs who are suffering from serious illnesses and behavioral issues that stem from a lack of proper socialization.
 
It’s unethical and unfair to animals and consumers. I hope you will support this legislation to crack down on puppy mill cruelty. Thank you for your consideration of this important matter.
