A New Jersey man has been charged with animal cruelty after decapitating a seagull who tried to take a French fry from his daughter. Demand maximum penalties in this case!
On July 6, 2024, North Wildwood police were called to Morey's Pier after witnesses reported that a man, who was later identified as Franklin Zeigler, had allegedly killed a seagull for trying to take French fries and asked a staff member for a trash bag while holding the dead bird's body.
Zeigler admitted to killing the bird, and reportedly became uncooperative with officers on an unrelated investigation, which led to him being arrested for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

On July 18, he was charged with third-degree animal cruelty. Unfortunately, due to the state's new bail reform laws, he was released on a summons and is expected to voluntarily appear in court on October 1.
New Jersey seagulls already have so much to worry about, that murderous and petty humans acting out in rage should not be yet another concern.
Letter to Decision Maker(s) for reference:
Subject: Maximum Sentencing for the Man Who Beheaded a Seagull at the Jersey Shore
County Prosecutor Jeffrey Southerland, I am writing to you to
support the prosecution of Franklin Zeigler, who was arrested on July 6, 2024, for brutally ripping a seagull’s head off.
Zeigler and his daughter were eating on the North Wildwood Boardwalk when the seagull swooped down for a french fry off of his daughter’s plate. Zeigler snatched the bird and ripped the bird’s head off in front of his daughter and other diners.
Zeigler was arrested on a charge of third-degree animal cruelty and two counts of disorderly conduct for his behavior with the responding officers. His case is 24000#766 and he is expected in court on October 1, 2024.
It’s horrifying that this malicious act was committed in front of his own child, and other members of the public, which clearly indicates he has serious anger and impulse control issues that must be addressed.
I hope your office will hold him accountable for this cruelty by seeking maximum penalties in this case, in addition to ensuring he receives mental health counseling and is not allowed to be around animals.
It’s your responsibility to protect both human and animal members of your community from any future harm he may cause. Thank you for your consideration of this important matter.
Sincerely,
Signed
