One of the bonds shared by every person who cares about animals is a bone-deep outrage over anyone who would bring harm to an innocent animal. It sickens each one of us to our cores when crimes against animals go unpunished!

Yet, you may not know that in many of the 50 U.S. states there are still no decent felony options for the neglect, abandonment, or sexual assault of animals. Some states don’t even require offenders to surrender their abused animals or seek harsher penalties for animal crimes committed in front of a child or other minor.

It’s WRONG and that’s why our Justice for Animals Campaign was created!

Today we are asking you to channel your anger and have your say. We need your voice and your support to change laws that are letting animal abusers off scot-free or with only a slap on the wrist.

You may recall the abhorrent 2015 case of a man in Winona, Mississippi, who burned his dog alive; then because the case was inappropriately filed under (more lenient) city ordinances, he got off with less than $350 in fines. Our Justice for Animals Campaign was called on to help with the case and has remained ever since.

While we can never erase the hurt and horror of this cruelest of crimes, with our help the Mayor of Winona, its board of alderman, new humane officer, and local police have cracked down on cruelty and made sure abuse crimes revert to the stricter state statutes. It’s a huge step in the right direction that never could have happened without support like yours.

However, to bring this kind of real change to cities and towns across our entire great nation requires money, and staff, and time. Your gift now keeps us fighting back against lax laws and lax enforcement of existing laws that both hurt animals.

Only together can we deter future, ugly, unlawful acts against innocent friends like Jolene the pot-bellied pig. Jolene was a beloved companion and member of her family who was recently shot five times, at point-blank range, from a stranger’s car for no earthly reason. She did not survive.

No animal should ever experience that kind of mortal fear! No guardian should ever worry that the laws of the land won’t protect cherished companions. For the sake of every Jolene, including your own animal friends at home, let’s push for change now and give law enforcement the proper resources for addressing cruelty cases.
