Ban Deadly Horse Carriages in Your State!
On February 29, exhausted carriage horse Aisha helplessly fell to her knees in the busy streets of New York City. Heartbreaking video shows Aisha repeatedly falling and struggling on the asphalt while her tormentors pull her with straps and blow smoke in her face. The shocking scenes exploded on social media, prompting a national outcry against the outdated and inhumane practice of horse-drawn carriages. Don’t let her struggle be in vain: seize this opportunity and urge your legislators to ban horse carriage rides in your state!
This gut-wrenching video of Aisha falling and repeatedly trying to get up went viral and exposed the health hazards imposed upon carriage horses everywhere. Instead of calling for a veterinarian to treat this traumatized horse, carriage drivers roped and shoved her into a trailer as she struggled to stand. New Yorkers for Clean, Livable, and Safe Streets posted the footage and held a vigil for Aisha after she was euthanized.
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio promised to ban carriage rides on the campaign trail but has since backed down or sold out. The New York Police Department’s Animal Cruelty Investigation Squad is currently investigating this case.
Horse-drawn carriages are inhumane and unsafe for horses and humans. Working horses can suffer injuries and die in the street. Horse carriage drivers have been documented breaking traffic laws and regulations that protect the horses. Navigating auto traffic, breathing toxic exhaust fumes, and working long hours without adequate rest in extreme temperatures takes a heavy toll on carriage horses who live unnaturally short lives.
Chicago, Illinois; Salt Lake City, Utah; Biloxi, Mississippi; Camden, New Jersey and several cities in Florida have banned horse carriage rides. We are working on a ban with activists in Sacramento, California. With your help, we can do more!
Horse carriage rides are still offered in all fifty states and Washington D.C. Join our national call to ban horse carriages in every state. Don’t let Aisha die in vain!
