Massachusetts Residents: Ban Cruel Fur Sales!

Massachusetts Residents: Ban Cruel Fur Sales!

This alert is no longer active, but here for reference. Animals still need your help.

Valid Massachusetts address required to submit.

Growing awareness about the atrocities in the fur industry have continued to lead to changes in the fashion industry and laws from the local to national level around the world prohibiting the sale of fur. Now Massachusetts could be next to take action.

Lawmakers are considering legislation (H990/S551), which would ban the sale of new fur products from animals raised on fur farms. Urge lawmakers to pass these important bills!

Tragically, millions of fur-bearing animals are trapped on the equivalent of factory farms, where they're crammed into barren wire cages, denied any enrichment or the ability to engage in natural behaviors. The overcrowding and psychological stress they're forced to endure often leads to stereotypic behaviors indicative of poor welfare, self-mutilation and aggression.

Not only does fur farming cause immense harm to animal victims, it poses serious environmental and public health issues, from run-off from farms to the potential to spread zoonotic diseases.

Since 2020, several municipalities in Massachusetts have passed fur-free bylaws, it's time to make it statewide.

The proposed legislation would ban the sale of products with fur from animals raised and killed on fur farms, and orders the attorney general to develop regulations for its implementation and enforcement within six months.

Subject: Ban Fur Sales in Massachusetts

As someone concerned with animal welfare, I’m writing to urge you to pass an act prohibiting the sale of newly farmed fur products (H990/S551).

Growing awareness about the atrocities in the fur industry has continued to lead to changes in the fashion industry and laws from the local to national level around the world prohibiting the sale of fur, including several municipalities in Massachusetts that have passed fur-free bylaws.

Tragically, millions of fur-bearing animals are trapped on the equivalent of factory farms, where they’re crammed into barren wire cages, denied any enrichment or the ability to engage in natural behaviors. The overcrowding and psychological stress they’re forced to endure often lead to stereotypic behaviors indicative of poor welfare, self-mutilation, and aggression.

Not only does fur farming cause immense harm to animals killed for their fur, but it also poses serious environmental and public health issues, from run-off from farms, greenhouse gas emissions, and toxic chemicals used in fur processing to the potential to spread zoonotic diseases. We already understand the risks of spreading diseases, including coronaviruses and avian influenza, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. A study published in Nature examining animals who died from diseases on fur farms in China between 2021 and 2024 found 125 different viruses, with around a third having a high risk of cross-species transmission.

Massachusetts now has an opportunity to close another door to this insidious trade. I hope you will take a stand for animal welfare and oppose these products of cruelty by passing this legislation.

Thank you for your consideration of this important matter.

Sincerely,

Signed
