Oregon Residents: Take Action to Ban Brutal Fur Sales Statewide!
This alert is no longer active, but here for reference. Animals still need your help.
As COVID-19 continues to decimate fur farms around the world, a recent investigation revealed that an Oregon mink fur farm has been infected. Dedicated organizations, groups, and animal advocates are now joining forces to make Oregon the next compassionate state to ban fur sales statewide!
This month, Representative Rob Nosse introduced House Bill 2676 to prohibit the sale of new fur products throughout Oregon state. Not only will this prevent senseless cruelty to fur-bearing animals, it will protect residents from the public health risks fur farming poses. Please take action to denounce this senseless violence in Oregon.
The brutal cruelty and devastating effects of fur farming are undeniable. Mink, foxes, chinchillas, rabbits, raccoons, and other fur-bearing animals are confined to filthy cages on fur farms where they suffer in terror until their last breaths. They are mercilessly bludgeoned, vaginally or anally electrocuted, and may even be skinned alive; an agonizing fate no living being should ever endure.
Now, a new level of cruelty is occurring on mink fur farms all over the world. Mink are highly susceptible to COVID-19. In the wild, mink are solitary animals who enjoy time in the water and their dens. On fur farms, mink are forced to live with thousands upon thousands of other mink which makes the spread of the novel coronavirus inevitable.
A recent investigation revealed a COVID-19 outbreak on a mink fur farm in Astoria, OR, that holds approximately 12,000 mink.
This outbreak is frightening news for Oregon residents in light of the recent events occurring in Denmark. The Danish government discovered COVID-19 mutations were being passed from mink to fur farm workers and back again. As a short-sighted response to this public health crisis, mink were gassed by the millions. Mink are semi-aquatic and can hold their breaths for extended periods which only prolonged their pain and terror as toxic gas filled their tiny lungs. Some mink survived the gassing process and were shot dead or burned alive.
Roughly 440,000 mink are held captive on fur farms throughout Oregon. It is unthinkable that innocent animals are still subjected to such unimaginable cruelty and agony to make fur coats, trim, and fashion accessories. With an abundance of high-quality faux fur available, animal fur is outdated and absolutely unnecessary. Bloomingdale's, Macy's, Nordstrom and TJ Maxx have all committed to go fur-free. In 2019, California became the first state in the nation to ban fur sales. Now, you have the ability to take action against the brutal fur trade and make Oregon next!
