There is powerful momentum building against the fur trade, and together, we are helping drive it. Online marketplace Etsy has announced a full ban on the sale of animal fur products, effective August 11, 2026. This includes so-called “vintage” fur items, closing a long-standing loophole that allowed fur to continue circulating in the marketplace.

This victory follows intense pressure by the Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade, which says Etsy’s announcement came after it staged more than 50 protests against Etsy and its affiliates in 17 cities during a 58-day campaign. That effort also included a staged disruption on March 3, 2026, of Etsy CEO Kruti Patel Goyal and CFO Lanny Baker’s live presentation to investors at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom Conference. The group’s persistent, high-visibility advocacy helped force this issue into the spotlight and push Etsy toward change. The group’s sustained recent work has helped bring us to this moment.

At the same time, this victory also belongs to you. More than 14,000 In Defense of Animals supporters took action, speaking up for animals and urging Etsy’s leadership to align its policies with compassion. Every message sent, every alert shared, every voice raised helped build the pressure that made this decision possible. Thank you for showing up, as it truly matters.

Under the updated policy, Etsy will prohibit products made from animals killed primarily for their fur, including items made from mink, fox, and rabbit. This is a significant step forward, helping to reduce demand for an industry built on immense suffering.

Because behind every fur item is a life that was confined, deprived, and taken. On fur farms, animals spend their lives in small cages, unable to express natural behaviors, before being killed for their pelts. In the wild, animals caught in traps can endure prolonged pain and fear before dying. These are realities that more people are recognizing and rejecting.

This decision sends a clear message: compassion is becoming the expectation, not the exception.
